Finding the sand tigers was easy. The krixa tracked them through the dead forest without difficulty, as the collars on the tigers didn’t allow them to stray far. Convincing the beasts to return to the clearing was another matter entirely. It took time and patience to round them up and force them back, without causing injury to them. Focusing on the tigers proved difficult as Dhaved’s thoughts were consumed with worry for Tika. But he understood why Captain Hawley had sent him away.

The krixa were making things worse with the frogs, not to mention that his life had been in jeopardy. Lieutenant Giordan had looked none too happy about being sent away and missing all the action. Ivar’s face held its usual scowl so reading the Protector’s feelings was pointless. By the time Dhaved and his group returned with the reluctant tigers, the frogs were defeated and the soldiers in the camp were tending the wounded and saying prayers for the dead.

Ambassador Heylann explained that it takes musta frogs a week to digest jewels, so no danger remained of being preyed upon again during the journey. Dhaved already knew this from his studies, but the soldiers needed reassurance. Still, reading about something and experiencing it wasn’t the same thing. The ambassador emptied out one of his satchels and deposited the frogs into it, securing them tight for the remainder of the journey.

Dhaved went over to Tika immediately upon his return to the camp. She sat on the ground, with Herra protectively at her side. Tika looked dazedly at the campsite that stood in shambles. She held a bandaged hand to her head and the other she rested on Herra’s back. The prince believed that if Herra moved, Tika would likely collapse to the ground — the tiger appeared to be holding the princess up.

“Are you well?” Dhaved asked and immediately realized how idiotic his question sounded. She winced.

“There’s no need to shout, Dhaved.”

His voice sounded normal to his ears, but he supposed her head must ache after all that had happened. She looked in better condition than her nursemaid, however, who lay on the ground with her midsection wrapped in bandages.

He began to sit down on the other side of Tika and Herra turned her head and growled, with golden eyes narrowing. He paused and cleared his throat nervously.

“Don’t be silly, Dhaved. You know Herra would never hurt you. She just enjoys teasing you. It’s just too easy to tease you, you know.”

Everybody teased him — mocked him might be a more accurate description. But only Tika was truly kind to him. Very few even addressed him as Prince. She didn’t often call him Prince Dhaved, but it wasn’t through lack of respect. It was because they were truly friends. Others dropped the royal address because they simply didn’t consider him worthy of the title. He saw and felt the difference.

As Dhaved sat down next to Tika he said, “It’s a well-known fact that uncollared sand tigers eat people.”

Herra licked her lips.
